How to Choose the Right Training Shorts

Puramont Momentum training shorts in black

The right training shorts disappear the moment you start moving. The wrong pair ride up, cling or distract you halfway through a set. Whether you lift, run or split your week between both, here is what to look for before you buy.

1. Freedom of movement

Squats, lunges, sprints and step-ups all ask a lot of your hips and legs. Look for shorts designed around unrestricted movement, with a cut that lets you move through a full range without pulling or riding up. If you can't comfortably drop into a deep squat in the changing room, they will not feel better under load.

2. Lightweight, breathable fabric

Heavy cotton holds sweat and gets uncomfortable fast. A lightweight performance fabric that breathes is the better choice for intense sessions, and it dries quicker too, which matters if you head straight from the gym to the rest of your day.

3. A fit you forget about

Check the waistband and length. The waistband should stay put without digging in, and the length should suit the way you train. Many people prefer a clean, mid-thigh look that works in the gym and out of it.

4. Colours you will actually wear

Neutral shades pair easily with almost any tee, so you get more outfits from fewer pieces. Black, grey, navy and olive are the safest bets.

5. Value that holds up

Training shorts take a beating from regular washing and hard sessions. Buying one reliable pair you reach for every week beats three that sit in the drawer.
